How They Work

How Do Septic Systems Work?

Septic Tank

The function of the tank is for natural and bacterial process to break the waste down. As the waste is broken down, it turns in to sludge, if the sludge is not pumped out regularly it will build up and start to wash out in to the field area. The out let baffle (see diagram) is designed to stop the flow of the scum layer (see diagram) into the drain field.

Drain Field

In a proper working system, the only thing entering into the field area is effluent water. The water is treated by the soil in the field area and returns to the earth’s water table. If the sludge is forced into the field area it will clog the natural soil absorption capability.
